Bike For Education Project
Challenge:
In many rural areas of Mwanza region, Northern Tanzania, children have to walk a long distance of 10-15 km spending 3-4 hours to get to school. For girls, who generally receive less support to continue their education than boys, the insecurity (gender-based violence/harassment on their way to school) and fatigue of walking miles to reach school may contribute to girls’ low school attendance and high drop-out rates.
School girls sometimes ask for lifts from Boda-Boda riders (Motor bike taxis) who in turn seek sexual favors increasing their chances of teen pregnancy, early marriage, and HIV/AIDS. Other students walk along path that leaves them at risk of being attacked by wild animals.
Our Solution:

We implement Bike 4 Education project to address the need for reliable, affordable transportation for rural school girls in Tanzania. Through this project, schoolgirls living 3-15 km or more receive a bicycle on the condition that they primarily use it to travel to school. Bicycles will reduce gender gap in school enrollment, facilitate access to schools, reduced time of travel, increase punctuality to school and promote academic performances as well as provide enhanced security as girls travel together in small groups. A Bicycle Supervisory Committee (BSC) is formed consisting of teachers, parents, and community leaders, and oversees/ monitor the project.
Why Bicycles for Education:
When you provide a bicycle, you empower girls to access education. Recent Research shows that A bicycle in hand for girls means:
