School Wash Project

Challenge:

In Mwanza slums of Northern Tanzania, water sanitation and hygiene situation are very poor whereas 84% of schools had No water for hand washing and 38% of schools had No Water supply. Mwanza slums are characterized by overcrowding, poor drainage, and lack of proper waste management system. Children in Mwanza slum schools are regularly exposed to unsafe WASH facilities and lack the basic education on practicing of hand washing.

This critical shortage explains continued existence of diseases including COVID-19, diarrhea, worms, and dysentery which are all linked to inadequate access to water supply, improper sanitation, and unhygienic behavior.

In Mwanza slums, Disease statistics indicates that 60-80% of the diseases requiring hospital attendance for children are those related to poor Sanitation of which could be prevented with good water quality and sanitation. These diseases NOT only affect children physical development but also school attendance and academic performance.

Out of every ten children who die, nine dies from diseases related to contaminated water. Estimates suggests that in 2020 there were more than ,500 diarrhea related death and nearly 900 acute respiratory infections (ARI) related death including COVID-19 among children of which nearly 90% were directly attributed to poor water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Our Solution:

Our School WASH project works to provide expertise and Interventions aimed at saving lives and reducing illness by improving access to healthy and safe water, adequate Sanitation, and Improved Hygiene. This project works on long-term Prevention and control measures for improving health, reducing Poverty, and improving Socio-Economic development as well responding to emergencies and outbreak of life-threatening illness.

Through this project we are distributing hand washing stations to public schools equipped with liquid soap that are foot-pedal powered (tippy taps) where users can wash hands without physically touching the tap and liquid soap container making least potential for contamination thus improving access to healthy and safe water, adequate Sanitation, and Improved Hygiene.

Theory of Change:

Believing a habit of lifetime starts when we are young our project places Children as change agents. Schools are important links to reaching individual families and communities. Children pass on their knowledge of hygiene behavior practice from schools to their families and thus influence the community.
